Enabling EAX ON ANY SOUND CARD

Post by LeeStricklin »

Creative's EAX was a very popular API used for 3D sound and was a damn good means of monopolizing the sound card market during the late 90s and half way into the 2000s. Eventually it would be depreciated in favor of OpenAL, but plenty of games still used EAX where available and Unreal and Unreal Tournament were prime examples on how to really take advantage of it. With that said, the community has eventually gone through the effort of cracking the shit out of Creative's ALchemy (allowing you to use it with non-Creative hardware) and Creative likely not knowing/caring or simply wanting to avoid a PR nightmare like what they faced with the Daniel_K incident (where it was revealed that they were artificially making their hardware obsolete and deliberately bricking cards) hasn't done anything about. With that said, I was able to find a guide and all of the files needed to make it work on my system. I simplified the process by putting all of the files into a download and re-writing the installation steps so that they can more easily be followed.

ALchemy files:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yck41fsu50twa ... rd.7z?dl=0

Extract ALchemy.7z and run the setup file inside it
Find C/Program Files (x86)/Creative/ALchemy
Copy the ALchemy directory to your desktop
Run CreativeALchemy14503RestrictionRemover
Click Patch
It will likely tell you that the file it's looking for can't be found, in which case you will need to browse for the two requested files in the directory you copied to your desktop.
Patch the files
Exit when complete
Now overwrite C/Program Files (x86)/Creative/ALchemy with the one you copied to your desktop

You now have EAX features on whatever soundcard or onboard audio you are currently using. Keep in mind that UT99 requires additional files to make this work, those can be found in the following unreal texture and old unreal links, download and install each one.It should also be noted that EAX works with UT99's bundled Galaxy 3D sound renderer, it won't do anything in OpenAL or FMOD. You should also open up ALchemy to make sure Unreal Tournament shows up on it's installed games list.

Probably Daniel_K lol Creative threatened to sue the hell out of him awhile ago after he made drivers that enabled cards to work as advertised under Windows Vista. Creative didn't like that. They claimed he was "stealing their goods" when he got a bunch of features working on them which previously only worked under XP and the community backlash towards Creative was severe. That played a role in me sticking to C-Media based cards (such as me and my girlfriend's X Meridians as well as my previous Xonar card).

I was fine with the on board sound, but then had issues with Far Cry Primal where sound wouldn't work unless it was a cut scene. So I installed my creative sb audigy 2 only to find out not supported by windows 10 which i was ok with because its an old ass card. I luckily found windows 10 drivers for it and now i have one less peripheral collecting dust lol
